Education Initiative

The Education Initiative is a pilot intervention for young people attending school who have been particularly identified by teaching/support staff as potentially ‘at risk’ of slipping into the More Choices More Chances (MC2) category or in need of additional support to engage within the school structure.

This bespoke programme is designed to support participants to develop and augment a range of new and existing skills which can be further expanded through their subsequent years at school.

Participants from Ardrossan Academy in Ayrshire recently took part in an Education Initiative programme at the STF Workshop in Saltcoats. They engaged in the construction of wooden bird boxes by learning to operate basic hand tools safely and effectively. At the same time the programme raised self-esteem, confidence and engagement, while looking at environmental matters within the local community. Participants also increased their awareness, knowledge and understanding of entrepreneurship and employability.

Ardossan Shorefront Project

As part of their SQA Rural Skills Award the young people designed a maintenance-free landscape on a prominent shorefront location in Ardrossan. Irvine Bay URC contributed towards the cost of the materials to develop the area. The young people selected a variety of species that are hardy, suitable for the coastal environment and require minimal maintenance. Coloured gravel was laid to imitate the sea and sand.
